1st July- "Doctor's Day" is a tribute offered to an outstanding personality, Dr B C Roy by the community of physicians of India . Born on July 1, 1882 at Bankipore in Patna in Bihar , Dr B C Roy started his career as a physician in 1911 armed with M.R.C.P and F.R.C.S. degrees. He was the founder member and President of Indian Medical Association in 1929 and served as the first President to The Medical Council of India in 1943. In tune with his passion to extend medical care & information to every stratum of the society, he established a number of medical colleges & hospitals, not to forget a center for training women in nursing and social work! Besides being a social reformer, he was a keen educationalist & was elected as President of the National Council of Education in 1942. The same year he was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of University of Calcutta. His foray into the freedom struggle and social reforms saw him becoming the first Chief Minister of Bengal on January 23, 1948 . There are a number of award instituted in his memory, the most exceptional being BC Roy National Award, instituted in 1976 which covers excellence in a variety of fields including medicine, politics, science, philosophy, literature and arts. He passed away on July 1, 1962 , on his eightieth birthday

The Association of Medical Consultants is one such unique organization in Mumbai which Dr B.C.Roy would have approved. It was founded 33 years ago and, to begin with, involved only Consultants practicing in the Western suburbs. Over the years, dictated by the immense need for an organisation of this nature (vide infra) the Association grew rapidly in numerical strength (encompassing Consultants from all over Greater Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane District, Mahad, Raigad, Pune, Nasik, Dhule, Indore, Gujarat, & Kerala) and in the scope of its objectives. Today it has nearly 5000 Consultant doctors as its member and is the only Body of its kind.

Whilst academic aspects are effectively dealt with by the respective Speciality Associations, the AMC brings together consultants of various specialties on one platform and aims to highlight and offer solutions to the all-important day-to-day problems faced by consultants. And who can deny that these are growing in variety and enormity?
